1830 U.S. Federal Census- To date, we have been unable to locate Jacob on the 1830 census.  However, it appears by the death certificate of Eliza Jane Hoss Mabry that they were in St. Louis, MO at the time of her birth.

1840 U.S. Federal Census of Lincoln County, MO, Lincoln City:

Jacob Hoss (head): 1 male age 15-20, 1 male age 40-50, 1 female age under 5, 1 female age 5-10, 1 female age 15-20 , 1 female age 40-50.

Poll Book, 1844, Lincoln Co., MO: Taken from Missouri Genealogical Gleanings 1840 & Beyond, Volume 1, by Sherida K. Eddlemon, Heritage Books, Inc., Published 1994, Page 65.  Names Jacob Hoss and Philip Mayberry.

Records of Maxine Bickham indicated that Jacob Hoss settled in Lincoln Co., MO in 1826.  It is evident by the birth of his son Henry that they settled in Lincoln Co., by late 1823 or early 1824 (Henry was born in May 1824).  Also see depositions under Jacob's father, Michael Hoss on Hoss website (you can find this site from the Favorites page of this website).

Jacob Hoss does not appear in the 1850 census.  Between 1848-49 there was an epidemic of cholera.  St. Louis lost over 3,000 lives during that epidemic and the cholera probably spread rapidly to outlying areas including Lincoln Co.  In 1847 to 1848 Influenza was worldwide.

All documents obtained so far indicate that Jacob was born in KY with one exception and that is the 1900 census of Montgomery Co., MO. which shows Henry Washington Hoss living with son, William H. Hoss.  Census states Henry's father was b. in Maryland and mother b. KY.

Death Certificate of Henry Washington Hoss states that Jacob was his father who was born in KY.  Mother was ______ Berryman b. KY.  Informant was Henry's son William H. Hoss.

Death Certificate of Eliza Jane Hoss Mabry states her father as Jacob Hoss b. KY and mother Martha Berryman (birthplace unknown).

1900 Census of Montgomery Co., MO for Eliza J. Mabry stated her father was born in KY and mother was born in KY.

From the Records of Gary Rea:

Aaron Beck was born March 26, 1814 in Tennessee.  Lived on Bear Creek until Margaret's death in 1841.  He was a mill wright by trade and worked in his father's mill.  His mother lived with him following his father's death.  She stayed with him until her own death.   Aaron was democrat until the formation of the Republican Party, after which he became a Republican.  He was Deacon of the Regular Baptist Church from 1851 until his death.  Aaron had a school building , the Beck School, named after him.  The original log school building, called Cuivre College, was replaced by the Beck School Building sometime in the 1890's.  In addition to Margaret Cannon and Mary Ann Hoss, Aaron was married to Rebecca Owings, about 1870, after Mary Ann's death.  By Mary Ann Hoss he had 5 children.

Portrait and Biographical Record of St. Charles, Lincoln and warren Counties, Chapman Pub. Co. 1895:

Aaron Terrel Beck. The name w/ which we head this biography needs no preface, the owner being well known as one of the prominent farmers of Lincoln Co.  He was b. in TN, in mar 1814 and is the s/o Jereminah and Sarah (Gipson) Beck, natives of N. and S. Carolina respectively.  The parents came to MO the yr. Of our Subjects B., making the long journey by wagon, and passing through the states of  KY and IL.  They crossed the Miss. River just above the mouth of the Missouri, and located in St.Charles. The father of our subject worked in the above place for some time after his arrival there, when he moved with his family to Big Creek, where is wife's father, Joseph Gipson, was living.  That gentleman had come to MO 3 years before and had settled on what is now known as the McCulloch place.  The early settlers were subjected to many and great inconveniences and dangers, which we of later yrs know nothing about, only as we hear them, related.  The father of our subject was compelled to go a distance of fifteen miles in order to get men enough to assist in raising his log cabin.  Their nearest neighbor was then three miles away, and on one occasion the family were stationed in Canady Fortin order to escape being killed by the Indians, who then were proving more than usually troublesome. When out in the fields at work the pioneers went in squads of ten or a dozen men, some of who were armed and acted as sentinels to warn the others of the approach of the Redman.  Jeremiah Beck passed away in June 1839, when about fifty-five years of age.  His wife made her home w/ Aaron T. until her decease, at the remarkable age of ninety years.  She was then enjoying good health, and her death was the result of an injury, which she had received. The parents of our subject were members of the Baptist Church, but in that early day, as there were not enough members to build a house of worship; they met at the dwelling of the different pioneers. In addition to carrying on his farm, Jeremiah Beck put up and operated the first mill within fifteen mills of his home.  The machinery used in grinding the bread stuffs was at first put in motion by hand-power: this, however, was later improved upon, and at the time of his death he intended to build a mill which would run by water-power. He was the father of a large family of children, of whom only three are now living, those besides Aaron T. being Kizzie, now the wife of William Hopkins, of Webb City, MO: and Z.E., a farmer in this township. The original of this sketch grew to mature years on the old place, and lived there until his marriage in 1839 to Margaret, daughter of Isaac Cannon. She was born on Turkey Creek, Lincoln County, and died about two years after her union, leaving a daughter.  Mr. Beck was a second time married, September 23, 1847, this union being with Mary Ann Hoss, who died in 1870.  She became the mother of five children, of whom those living are Margaret E., the wife of Jerry Beck, of Indian Nation: Thomas, living on the homestead: Aurora M., now Mrs. Nathan Anson, of this County: and Jacob, who is engaged in farming in this township. William H. is deceased.  Mr. Beck married for this third wife Rebecca Owings, whose death occurred in 1880. At the time of his union with Miss Cannon, our subject was working in his father's mill. He soon, however, removed with his bride to an uncultivated tract of land on Bear Creek and made that place his home until the death of his wife. He had formerly learned the trade of millwright, and for a period of seven years operated the mill owned by his father, and at the same time ran a distillery. Both of these occupations he later abandoned in order to give his entire time and attention to farm pursuits.  He was very expert in the use of tools, and after location upon his farm in 1839 built the house in which his family lived for many years.  This property he entered from the Government at their land office at Palmyra.  It comprises a quarter section, on which he has made all the many fine improvement, which the visitor sees today, and on which he is spending the declining years of his life, in the enjoyment of these comforts, which have been earned by years of earnest toil.  In addition to the many enterprises in which Mr. Beck has been engaged, we must not omit that of mining, as he worked for eighteen months in the Iowa lead mines.  He joined the Regular Baptist Church in 1851, and during most of his life since that time has filled the office of Deacon.  A Democrat until the formation of the Republican Party, he now votes for the latter's candidates and takes a great interest in its success.  Mr. Beck can relate many a thrilling tale of early life in Missouri, and it is a great satisfaction to him that he had been permitted to live to see the development of this section and the vast improvement made in both the quality and quantity of the farm products raised.  He has aided very materially in its advancement, and consequently enjoys the high regard of a large  circle of friends and acquaintances.

Article from Margie Rieger, Written by Mrs. Walden (Elsie ) Cope:

"Belleville"

Belleville in 1878 was located on the Blackburn acreage about eight miles southeast of Bellflower.  Jonesburg was the  nearest railroad at the time the farmers yarded their cattle at Belleville.  Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoss ran this Post Office and Stage Stop and it was named after their daughter Ada Belle.  Belleville was a Post Office located approximately two and a half miles east of Price's Branch.  It was known as Belleville and used as a post office and stopping overnight place or Half-Way House on the way to Jonesburg from the Silex, Olney, and Truxton areas.  Farmers would drive their fat hogs and cattle by here on the way to rail cars in Jonesburg that would take them on to market in St. Louis.  They would get there by evening, eat, and sleep overnight here, then finish their trip the next day.  The Hoss family operated this for many years.  This building still stands and has been kept in repair by its owners.  The east end on the main floor has the shelving, postal box holes, and fireplace as they were.

Ollie Blanche Hoss, daughter of Henry and Martha Hoss, was born April 10, 1868, near Jonesburg, Missouri.  Following a period of several years of failing health she passed away at 3:30 pm September 6, 1944 in the Deaconess Hospital in St Louis at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 26 days.  She was married to Joseph William Cushman on December 13, 18 93.  To this union were born 5 children:

MadeIone, Thomas, Naomi and Willard.  Her husband and two daughters, MadeIone and Naomi have preceded her in death.  At an early age, she became a member of the Methodist Church.  Following her marriage, she united with Walnut Grove Presbyterian church which membership she held until her death.  She leaves to mourn her departure three children: Madge of Middletown, Thomas of Rolla, MO and Willard of Amarillo, TX; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Thomas H. Cushman, and Mrs. J. Willard Cushman; three grandchildren, Thomas Jr., Joyce Ann and James Edward Cushman, who she truly adored; one sister, Miss Lucy Hoss of Bellflower, MO, one brother J. B. Hoss of Middletown , MO, who for many years has made his home with her and has tenderly cared for her through all her years of ailing health with spirit of devotion and self-denial, which is an inspiration to all who knew them; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Eva Hoston of Middletown, MO and Mrs. Will Hoss of Pacific , MO; a number of nieces and nephews and many relatives and friends.  Throughout her life she was devoted to her family , her church and her friends and was loved by all.  All her life she ------- ----- great love of music.  During her earlier years, she obtained a fine musical education and for many years used this talent in the interest of her church and community.  she posed and unusually friendly and genial disposition, a keen and ready sense of humor which she retained throughout her entire life, regardless of the many tribulations through which she passed.  her philosophy of life was simple but beautiful and was demonstrated in deeds rather than word in life of Christian service and devotion to her loved ones.  Her children wish to express their parting message and tribute with these lines:

"Mother"

Used to wonder just why Mother

Never had much time for play;

Used to wonder why she'd rather

Work each minute of the day;

Used to wonder why she never

Loafed along the road and shirked;

Can't recall a time whenever

Mother played while others worked;

Saw her cheeks were getting paler,

didn't understand just why;

Saw her body getting frailer,

Then at last I saw her die;

Rest had come! her task were ended.
